From Personal Letters to Living Scripture

Nichiren's scattered letters and treatises were gathered and preserved by his successors after his death, and different Nichiren denominations that developed in the centuries following, including Nichiren Shoshu and the lay organization Soka Gakkai that grew out of it, transmit differing collections and translations, with disagreement over which individual letters are authentically Nichiren's own writing and which were later attributed to him. Despite that unresolved textual question at the margins, the Gosho functions today as devotional and doctrinal reading across the Nichiren family of traditions, studied alongside chanted portions of the Lotus Sutra itself rather than treated as a secondary commentary beneath it. Its role is closer to how the Gospels function for Christians who also hold an Old Testament than to a straightforward commentary tradition, in that the Gosho carries independent devotional weight for the communities that read it as the direct teaching of their founder rather than as explanatory material standing beneath the Lotus Sutra it constantly interprets. Modern critical editions produced by different denominational bodies sometimes translate identical letters differently or include different supplementary material, so a reader's choice of edition can itself signal denominational affiliation within the wider Nichiren tradition.
