Medical Review and What Inexplicable Means

Lourdes maintains a standing Medical Bureau, open to any physician who wishes to examine a claimed cure, and a smaller International Medical Committee that reviews the strongest cases against the applicant's full medical record. The Committee reviewed Micheli's file in 1969 and again in 1971 and agreed unanimously that the recovery could not be explained by the medicine of the time; his archbishop then made the formal declaration of a miracle in 1976, the last step in a process that by design takes years and involves dozens of specialists.

The Bureau's own standard is explicitly narrower than a theological miracle claim: it asks only whether a recovery is unexpected, complete, lasting and without explanation by current medical science, not whether God acted. The historian Ruth Harris situates recognitions like Micheli's within Lourdes's wider institutional culture of exhaustive, genuinely rigorous medical review built specifically to certify rare exceptions, noting that the roughly seventy cures the church has recognized since the shrine's founding represent a very small fraction of the many millions of pilgrims who have visited without a comparable outcome. The distinction between an inexplicable recovery and a proven divine act is one the Bureau itself insists on, and it is the reason the church's language stays deliberately narrower than the devotional language pilgrims often use.
