A Year Told as a Story

Published Wiccan sources map a single narrative across the eight sabbats already catalogued in this atlas: the God is born of the Goddess at Yule in midwinter; grows through Imbolc; comes into strength at Ostara; becomes the Goddess's consort at Beltane; reaches the height of his power at Litha, midsummer; is cut down as the first grain at Lughnasadh; declines through the second harvest at Mabon; and dies at Samhain, passing into the underworld to await rebirth at the following Yule. Scott Cunningham's Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner sets out this cycle for a general Wiccan readership as the shared narrative frame behind the sabbats' individual observances.

Ronald Hutton's historical account is again clear that the cycle is a mid twentieth century construction, agricultural and solar in its logic and assembled from a range of older folkloric and literary material rather than inherited whole from any single pre-Christian religion. That does not make the myth thin: it gives eight otherwise separate seasonal observances a single continuous story, turning a calendar into a narrative.

Some published tellings also draw an explicit parallel between the God's cycle and older attested dying and rising god figures from the ancient Near East and Mediterranean, such as Attis, Adonis and Osiris, a comparative framing popularized earlier in the twentieth century by James Frazer's The Golden Bough, though Frazer's own comparative method is now regarded by anthropologists as considerably less reliable than it was once taken to be.
