Family Talk with Dr. James Dobson is, in a narrow sense, the second act of a career James Dobson had already spent thirty three years building. When he left Focus on the Family in 2010, after founding it in 1977 and turning it into one of the most listened to religious radio broadcasts in the United States, Dobson did not treat the departure as a retirement. He launched Family Talk almost immediately, under the ministry that would become the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute, built from Colorado Springs, Colorado around the same basic format that had made his earlier broadcast successful: daily commentary on marriage, parenting, child development and American culture, delivered from an evangelical Christian perspective.
The new program found its distribution primarily through Salem Media Group, the Christian and conservative media company that added Family Talk to its lineup in major markets across the country, including New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Houston, Atlanta and Portland, Oregon, alongside numerous additional Christian radio affiliates carrying the broadcast independently of Salem's own station group. That syndication network let Family Talk reach a national audience without rebuilding the station relationships Dobson had spent decades assembling for his first broadcast, inheriting much of Focus on the Family's own affiliate goodwill even as it operated as a fully separate program and a fully separate organization.
