The Ruler in the Twelve-Archetype Framework

The Ruler, also given as Sovereign or Leader, belongs with the Creator and the Caregiver under the motivation toward stability and control. Its aim is to create a prosperous and well-ordered community; its fear is of chaos and of being overthrown; its strategy is to exercise authority and to take responsibility; its shadow is tyranny, the confusion of order with control, and the inability to delegate. Pearson places it among the self archetypes and reads it as the capacity to take responsibility for one's own life and, beyond that, for a shared world. In the brand application it is the archetype of premium and prestige positioning, which is a considerable narrowing of the developmental reading.

Historical rulers invoked as embodiments of the archetype in popular writing, figures such as Hammurabi, codifier of one of the earliest surviving law collections, or various dynastic monarchs credited with unifying fragmented territories, are typically drawn from very different political systems and legitimating ideologies, divine kingship, mandate of heaven, feudal oath, that the single-archetype framework flattens into one generic "ruler" pattern. Jung's own writing does not treat kingship as one of his central archetypal figures in the way he treats the shadow or the anima, so the Ruler owes more to political anthropology's long-standing interest in sacred kingship, studied by figures such as James Frazer in comparative religion, than to any specific Jungian source, a lineage the brand literature rarely credits directly.
