The Sage belongs with the Innocent and the Explorer under the motivation toward independence and fulfilment. Its aim is to find the truth and to understand the world as it is; its fear is of being deceived, or of being ignorant and wrong; its strategy is study, analysis and the search for good information; its shadow is the endless deferral of action in favour of more study, and a contempt for those who know less. In Pearson's developmental sequence the Sage is one of the self archetypes and is placed last of the twelve, on the reading that the capacity to see clearly is what the whole journey is for. Of Jung's own named figures, the Wise Old Man, whom he treats as a personification of meaning appearing in dreams at moments of impasse, is the nearest equivalent.
The Wise Old Man Jung describes is explicitly ambivalent in his own writing, capable of embodying superior insight and of becoming a dangerous, deceptive figure, notably in fairy tales where an old man's advice leads the hero astray, which sits uneasily with the more uniformly positive Sage of the twelve-archetype brand scheme. Jung's broader treatment of wisdom figures also includes the closely related anima and animus dynamics and the idea of the self as an organising centre the psyche moves toward but never fully reaches, concepts considerably more technical and less easily summarised than the Sage's tidy aim, fear, strategy and shadow format, which was designed for practical use in branding workshops rather than as a restatement of analytical psychology.
