Thirty Five Thousand Photographs of a Cure That Became a Cult

Synanon began in 1958 as something genuinely new: a residential community where people with addictions confronted each other's denial directly, loudly, and without the professional distance conventional treatment kept. It worked well enough, for long enough, that Synanon's founder Charles Dederich became a minor celebrity and its "Synanon Game" of confrontational group therapy influenced treatment programs far beyond the organization itself. The Synanon Fix, Rory Kennedy's four-episode HBO documentary from 2024, tells that story and then tells what came after it, when the same community turned on itself.

What makes the series unusual among documentaries about American cults is what it had to work with. Synanon filmed itself constantly and kept nearly everything, leaving behind an archive of some 35,000 photographs and 3,000 hours of footage that Kennedy's team drew on directly, so long stretches of the series are not talking heads describing the past but the organization's own cameras recording it as it happened. That includes some of its worst turns: Dederich's later demand that long married couples divorce and take new, assigned partners, the group's descent into paranoia and violence against perceived enemies, and its brief, late attempt to reclassify itself as a religion.

The series is built as much from former members' testimony as from the footage, people who joined a program that saved their lives and stayed long past the point where staying cost them something they can now name precisely. That combination, an organization's own unusually complete self-record set against the people who lived inside what that record does not show, is what an outside documentary can do that no institution's own account of itself ever will.
