Baitullah Mehsud's Shura Council and Its Successors

Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan is designated a terrorist organization by Pakistan and other governments, and an active insurgency continues along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, one of the longest running armed conflicts in the region. It was founded by Baitullah Mehsud, who led it as a shura council uniting roughly a dozen Pakistani militant factions along the Afghan border, from its formation in December 2007 until his death in August 2009, a tenure of not quite two years that nonetheless fixed the movement's basic organizational shape for everything that followed.

The movement is organized today into factions including the Mehsud group, the Muqami Taliban and the Punjabi Taliban, a structure that traces directly back to Mehsud's founding shura council and the loose coalition of roughly a dozen factions he first brought together along the Afghan border. Mehsud himself is the only individual named across either of this movement's two articles, and he has been dead since 2009; no living founder, commander or spokesman is named in the sourced record for either piece, and the movement's current leadership is not identified by name in the facts consulted.
