An Umbrella, Not a Single Tradition

Because Two-Spirit was coined as a single modern English umbrella covering several hundred distinct Indigenous nations, each with its own language, history and religious framework, scholars and Indigenous organizers caution strongly against treating it as describing one tradition or one social role, and this atlas follows that caution by recording the term itself, its 1990 coinage and its contemporary pan-Indigenous use, rather than surveying the specific historical roles of individual nations, which vary enormously in name, religious meaning and social function and are properly documented at the level of each nation's own tradition rather than flattened into a single composite account. Not every Indigenous nation had, or has, a comparable role, and among those that did the details, spiritual significance, social status and expected life path differed substantially from nation to nation, so that Two-Spirit functions today primarily as a contemporary political and community identity term, useful for building solidarity and access to services across many nations at once, distinct from, though respectful toward, the older and more specific traditions it gathers under one modern label.
