The Vimshamsha chart, D-20, is the tenth of the sixteen divisional charts, formed by dividing each sign into twenty parts. It signifies spiritual practice, devotion, and religious life, the strength and character of a person's sadhana, worship, and inner discipline. An astrologer consults the D-20 for questions of religious inclination, the deity or path to which one is drawn, and progress in spiritual endeavour. The chart is one of the shodashavarga, the set of harmonic subdivisions through which jyotisha magnifies each department of a single nativity, and it is among the charts turned to for the more subtle and interior areas of life. These are the interpretive conventions of the tradition; the divisional charts are a method for extracting focused readings from the birth longitudes.
As with the D-16, the classical textual base for the Vimshamsha's exact division rule is thinner than for the six major vargas, and different manuals and software implementations can diverge on the precise starting-point convention used to place its twenty divisions. Because it concerns religious and spiritual life, some traditional astrologers weigh the Vimshamsha specifically when a client asks about initiation, the choice of a guru, or the likely direction of a person's devotional practice, treating it as a supplementary check alongside the ninth house of the Rashi chart, which governs dharma and religion more generally, rather than as a chart consulted routinely in the way the Navamsha or Dashamsha are.
