Unity of Witnessing Against Unity of Being
Sirhindi presented wahdat al-shuhud as a higher and more mature stage of mystical realization than wahdat al-wujud, arguing from his own contemplative experience that a mystic who progresses far enough eventually recognizes the earlier sense of ontological unity as a subjective state of the perceiving mind rather than a fact about ultimate reality, and returns to a clearer sense of the ordinary distinction between servant and Lord. This claim to have gone further than Ibn Arabi's school, rather than simply having disagreed with it, gave the doctrine unusual polemical force within Naqshbandi circles, where Sirhindi is remembered as the Mujaddid, the renewer of the second Islamic millennium.
Later Naqshbandi teachers were divided over how sharply to read the contrast, some treating wahdat al-shuhud and wahdat al-wujud as genuinely opposed accounts of ultimate reality and others treating them as compatible descriptions of different stages or emphases within a single mystical path. The debate between the two positions remains a standard reference point in the history of Sufi metaphysics, cited whenever later scholars discuss the proper relationship between mystical experience and orthodox theology.
