What a Museum Can Show and What It Cannot

Gerald Gardner spent his final decades building something most religious founders never get to see fully formed: an entire initiatory system, complete with its own ranks, its own liturgy, and its own text, the Book of Shadows, that new members receive only under oath from someone who received it the same way before them. None of that material is public, and under this atlas's own policy toward oathbound religious material, none of it appears here either.

What does appear is a painting. In 2002, Highcliffe Castle in Dorset donated an oil portrait of Gardner, painted by the artist Lisa Berkshire for an exhibition called Myths and Magic, to the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle, where it now hangs under accession number 1143, seated at a table, rendered the way any founder of any institution might be rendered by an artist working decades after the fact.

The gap between the painting and the tradition it depicts is instructive. A museum can hold and display an image of Gerald Gardner precisely because that image was never meant to be secret. It was painted for public exhibition, in a public building, decades after Gardnerian Wicca's founding, by an artist with no initiatory relationship to the tradition at all. The Book of Shadows stayed with the covens that hold it. The portrait went to a museum. Only one of the two was ever meant to travel.
