Painted for Every Visitor, Not Only the Initiated

Vajrayana Buddhism draws a real and consistently maintained line between what it teaches openly and what it reserves for students who have received formal empowerment from a qualified teacher. Deity yoga, the visualization practices and sadhanas associated with specific tantric deities, sits behind that line. This painting does not.

Wheel of Life images of this kind are traditionally installed at the entrances of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and temples, the very first thing a visitor sees on the way in, deliberately placed where monastics and lay pilgrims alike, initiated or not, will encounter it. Its purpose is public instruction, not ritual practice: it teaches karma, rebirth and the structure of samsara to anyone willing to stand and look, using imagery any visitor could follow without prior training. That openness is not a loophole or an oversight in an otherwise closed system. It reflects a real and long-standing distinction within Vajrayana itself between the vehicle's extensively published philosophy and history, freely taught and freely depicted, and its empowerment-bound practice material, which is not. A painting meant to greet every visitor at the door was never the part of the tradition anyone tried to keep behind it.
