The first ray is the hardest of the seven to write about honestly, because it is the one whose description most easily flatters the reader. In Bailey's account it is the ray of will, of purpose held steady and imposed, and of the destroyer function: the capacity to end an arrangement that has outlived its use so that something else can begin. The scheme does not present destruction as a fault. It presents it as the necessary first move of any real change, and it holds that a first ray soul or personality is one that will make that move whether or not it is welcome.
The difficulty is what follows. A typology that names domination, cruelty and isolation as the shadow of a quality it also calls the highest is a typology that hands a reader a ready explanation for their own harshness. Bailey wrote through the 1930s and 1940s and applied the rays to nations as well as to people, and the political readings in those volumes have not aged well. Later Theosophical writers have argued about them; the atlas records the ray scheme as a modern construction rather than an inherited teaching, and that verdict applies to the political material with particular force.
What the first ray is useful for, read as a description rather than a diagnosis, is naming a real temperament: the person who is at their best in a crisis and their worst in a committee, who can close something down and cannot keep it running. The scheme's own remedy is the second ray, which is why the two are so often discussed together.
