The Wilton Diptych's left panel is as much a political statement as a devotional one. King Richard II kneels in prayer, but he does not kneel alone or without introduction: he is presented to the Virgin and Child by three figures chosen with evident care, Edward the Confessor and Edmund the Martyr, two earlier English kings later venerated as saints, and John the Baptist, Richard's own personal patron saint. The pairing links the reigning king directly to a lineage of sanctified English royal predecessors, a visual argument for the sacred legitimacy of his own kingship rather than a neutral devotional portrait.
The right panel carries the same argument further into its smallest details. The Virgin and Child are surrounded by eleven angels, a number some scholars connect to Richard's age at his 1377 coronation, and several of the angels wear Richard's own personal badge, a white hart, a heraldic device closely associated with him throughout his reign, pinned to their clothing as though the king's own household symbol had been extended into the celestial court itself. One angel holds a banner topped by a small gold orb bearing a tiny painted map, showing what most art historians read as an island representing England, offered up toward the Christ Child as though the kingdom itself were being placed under divine protection.
Small enough to close like a book and carry with him, the diptych let Richard take this argument about his own sacred kingship literally wherever he went, a private object making a public claim.
