Article one treats the world egg as a mythic image of the cosmos emerging from a bounded, self-contained whole. A modern and unrelated coincidence is worth addressing directly, because it circulates as though it were evidence about the myths rather than about a translator's choice of words.
Georges Lemaitre, the Belgian priest and physicist who first proposed in 1931 that the universe originated from the decay of a single, extremely dense "primeval atom," a proposal that became a foundation of what is now called Big Bang cosmology, saw his idea informally described by some contemporaries using egg-like language for the initial concentrated state from which everything expanded. Lemaitre himself was careful, publicly and repeatedly, to keep his physics and his Catholic faith in separate registers, and explicitly rejected readings of his cosmology as scientific confirmation of Genesis.
That has not stopped a recurring popular claim that ancient world-egg cosmogonies "anticipated" modern cosmology, on the strength of the superficial resemblance between a single originating point and a hatching egg. The resemblance is a coincidence of description rather than of content: the mythic egg is generally a plenum already containing a fully formed, if compressed, world waiting to unfold, while the Big Bang model describes matter, space and time themselves coming into existence with no prior container or content at all. Treating the two as versions of one idea mistakes a loose figure of speech, current briefly among some mid-twentieth-century popularisers rather than among cosmologists working the mathematics, for a substantive convergence that the physics does not support.
