Black Myth: Wukong, released by the Chinese studio Game Science for PlayStation 5 and Windows on August 20, 2024, is set five hundred years after the end of the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West. Sun Wukong, the Monkey King who defied the gods at the end of that story, has since been struck down by the heavenly general Erlang Shen, and the player takes the role of the Destined One, a monkey seeking to recover Wukong's six senses and restore his lost godhood.
The world the game builds its story around is not drawn from a single religious system but from the shared, overlapping cosmology of popular Chinese religion, in which Buddhist, Daoist and local folk deities appear together rather than staying confined to separate institutions. Erlang Shen, described in coverage of the game as a Chinese folk god, stands opposite Sun Wukong; the bodhisattva Maitreya appears in the story; and the player fights and travels among yaoguai, supernatural beings native to Chinese folklore rather than to any one canonical text. The game roots this cast in real geography as well as myth, building levels around locations modeled on actual temple sites, including Kaiyuan Temple and the Dazu Rock Carvings, so that a player moves through a version of the same landscape those deities and demons are still associated with today.
