A Creator Who Delegates Rather Than Rules Directly

Xwede, God, is the ultimate creator in Yazidi theology, understood as the source of all existence and, in that foundational sense, the supreme being of the tradition, yet Yazidi religious practice in its ordinary, lived form is oriented far more directly toward Melek Taus and the wider Heptad than toward Xwede himself, reflecting a specific theological structure in which God, having created the world, entrusted its ongoing governance to these seven holy beings and largely withdrew from direct, everyday involvement in worldly affairs. This structure gives Yazidism a genuinely distinctive shape among monotheistic and monotheism-adjacent traditions: Xwede's existence and ultimate sovereignty are not in question, but the practical religious life of prayer, festival and pilgrimage centres on Melek Taus and the Heptad as the active, addressable intermediaries through whom Xwede's will is expressed and through whom Yazidis relate to the divine in daily practice.
