The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church traces its roots to a congregation organized by Black members of New York City's John Street Methodist Episcopal Church in 1796, formally constituting itself as an independent denomination in 1821. Because of its early ties to abolitionism, members and associates included Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Sojourner Truth, it is often called "The Freedom Church." Its headquarters are located in Charlotte, North Carolina.
