The Community Church of New York is a Unitarian Universalist congregation in Manhattan tracing its origins to the Second Congregational Unitarian Society, organized in 1825. In 1919 the congregation adopted its present name and an interfaith, socially engaged Community Church model under minister John Haynes Holmes, a co-founder of the NAACP who led the church from 1907 to 1949. The congregation hosted a 1960 debate between Malcolm X and Bayard Rustin and a 1990 address by Nelson Mandela, and it was recognized as an LGBT Welcoming Congregation by the Unitarian Universalist Association in 1997.
