The Jewish community of Rome traces itself to the second century before the common era and is the oldest in Europe. Its Tempio Maggiore, opened in 1904 on the edge of the former ghetto, is the community's main synagogue and follows the distinct Italian rite. The community offices, school and museum share the site.
