Manaiakalani is the fishhook of Maui, formed from the curve of stars the Greek list calls the tail of Scorpius. In the Hawaiian account Maui uses the hook to pull the islands up out of the sea, and the hook is set in the sky afterwards. It is one of the clearest cases of a Polynesian sky figure that follows the shape of the stars exactly: the curve and the barb are both there, and the resemblance needs no argument. The same hook appears across Polynesia under related names, and it is a navigational marker as well as a story, since its position gives a bearing and a season.

The Hook That Pulled Up the Islands

Manaiakalani is Maui's fishhook, and unlike most sky figures anywhere it looks like what it is called. The tail of Scorpius curves and then hooks back, and the barb is at the end. No interpretive effort is required.

The account is the most widely told story in Polynesia with local variants everywhere. Maui goes fishing with his brothers, using a hook made from a jawbone and baited in a way the versions disagree about, and hauls up land from the seabed. In Aotearoa the North Island is the fish, Te Ika-a-Maui, and the South Island is the canoe he stood in. In Hawaii and Tonga and elsewhere the islands raised are the local ones. The hook goes into the sky afterwards.

As a navigational object it is excellent. It is bright, it is unmistakable, it lies well south, and its position through the night and the year gives both a bearing and a season. The star at the barb, Shaula, and the one beside it are close together and low, which makes them a good horizon reference.

Scorpius is one of the few constellations that the Greek tradition also drew as something the stars actually resemble. A scorpion with a curled tail and a hook is not far from a fishhook, and both readings are working from the same real curve.

Maui, and a Figure Held Across an Ocean

Maui appears from Hawaii to Aotearoa to Tonga to Tahiti, doing broadly the same things: fishing up islands, snaring the sun to slow it down, obtaining fire, and dying in an attempt to defeat death. The distribution covers a triangle roughly the size of Eurasia, settled by voyaging over centuries, and the consistency of the figure across it is a direct measure of how connected that world was.

The fishhook in the sky travels with him. The same stars carry a related name and a related account across the region, with the local geography substituted, which is exactly the pattern you would expect from a tradition carried by people who moved and kept in contact rather than one that diffused slowly overland.

The variation is as informative as the consistency. Which islands were pulled up, what the hook was made of, who was in the canoe and what went wrong all change by island group, and the changes track settlement history.

For the atlas this figure sits alongside Te Waka o Rangi rather than competing with it. The canoe is a Maori framing of a large sweep of sky; the hook is a pan-Polynesian figure occupying one part of it. Both were in use, and a sky tradition holding two overlapping schemes at once is normal rather than confused.
