The Roman Catholic diocese covering Trier in western Germany, one of the oldest dioceses north of the Alps, with roots in late antiquity when the city was a Roman imperial residence. Since at least the twelfth century it has been the keeper of the Holy Robe of Trier, venerated as the seamless tunic worn by Christ at the crucifixion, which is kept at Trier Cathedral and shown to the public only at irregular intervals decades apart. The showing of 1844 provoked the protest that produced the German Catholic breakaway movement, a measure of the scale those expositions have historically drawn.
