Egypt's Ministry of Awqaf (Ministry of Religious Endowments) is the state body responsible for administering waqf, Islamic religious endowments, and for overseeing the country's mosques, including the licensing and content of Friday sermons delivered from them. Its custodial role extends from managing endowed properties whose income supports mosques, schools and charitable works, to a modern regulatory function coordinating Egypt's religious institutions with state policy, making it one of the most consequential government custodians of institutional Islam in the Arab world.
