Okana is cast when exactly one of the sixteen cowrie shells lands mouth up, the first and simplest configuration in the Diloggun corpus. It opens the numbered sequence used across the Lucumi tradition of Cuba and its diaspora. Like every Diloggun sign, its praise lines, proverbs and prescribed remedies are held by initiated diviners, italeros and oriates, and are not reproduced here.

How a Diloggun Throw Is Read

Diloggun divination casts sixteen cowrie shells, each filed or worn down on its back so that it can land either mouth up or mouth down. The number of open mouths, from zero to sixteen, names the parent sign for that throw; Okana is what results when only one shell lands open. The system reached Cuba with enslaved Yoruba people from what is now southwestern Nigeria and Benin, and cowrie shells themselves had already circulated across West Africa for centuries as currency before they were repurposed as a divining medium, a history documented by William Bascom among others.

In Cuba the practice took root inside the Regla de Ocha, commonly called Santeria, where it became the oracle proper to initiated priests and priestesses of the orishas rather than to the babalawos who read Ifa with a divining chain or palm nuts. A single reading session normally casts a parent sign twice in succession to produce one of the two hundred fifty six compound Odu that the tradition actually interprets; the sixteen parent signs described in this set are the building blocks of that larger corpus, not readings in themselves. Okana, as the first and statistically most common configuration, opens the numbered sequence used across Lucumi manuals and oral teaching alike. What a diviner says when Okana falls, the proverbs attached to it and the remedies it calls for, belongs to initiated readers and to the person who receives the reading, and is not set out on a reference page.

Sixteen Cowries, and How the Book Was Made

The standard scholarly account of the cowrie oracle in English is William Bascom's Sixteen Cowries: Yoruba Divination from Africa to the New World, published by Indiana University Press in 1980. It is a large volume, much of it Yoruba text with facing English translation, and it sets Nigerian practice beside its New World descendants rather than treating either alone.

Two features of the book shape what a reference page can responsibly say. It was built from fieldwork, from what identifiable diviners were willing to say to a researcher at a particular time, so it is a record of specific practice rather than a canon. And it is comparative, which is why the atlas can state with confidence which of the sixteen parent names carry across from Ifa and which do not: that is exactly the kind of structural claim a comparison establishes.

Okana, the one-mouth throw, is documented within that record as the first of the sixteen parent signs.

What the same record does not establish, and does not attempt to, is a general meaning for any sign. Bascom collected material from people who chose what to give him, working inside a tradition that confers its interpretive knowledge through initiation. The proverbs, the myth narratives and the remedies attached to Okana belong to initiated diviners and to the person receiving a reading, and are not reproduced here.
