Origin 1987 to 1990
MODERN INVENTION. Yellow Warrior is the sixteenth of the 20 Solar Seals in the MODERN Dreamspell system devised by Jose Arguelles (1987), not a traditional Maya day sign in its Dreamspell form. Its keywords are Intelligence, Questioning and Fearlessness; its action is to question, its power is intelligence, and its essence is fearlessness. It corresponds loosely to the Maya day Cib.

Yellow Warrior in the Dreamspell Scheme
Yellow Warrior is the sixteenth Solar Seal, yellow and of the south in Arguelles's rotation. Its stated triad is intelligence as its power, questioning as its action and fearlessness as its essence, and it is read in Dreamspell practice for enquiry, courage and the willingness to challenge. The name is a coinage; the underlying Maya day has nothing to do with warriors, and this is another of the seals where the Dreamspell name will mislead anyone who takes it for a translation.
In the Dreamspell tradition, Yellow Warrior, Solar Seal 16, is described as governing intelligence, fearlessness and the questioning mind, terms not derived from Cib's borrowed owl and ancestor imagery. Yellow Warrior belongs to the Dreamspell's Yellow colour family, alongside Yellow Seed, Yellow Star, Yellow Human and Yellow Sun. As the overview of this system notes, Warrior is one of the small number of seal names, alongside Wizard and Skywalker, that replace an attested Maya meaning outright. Its Dreamspell wavespell is the sixteenth of twenty. As the overview of this system already notes, Warrior is among the small number of seal names, alongside Wizard and Skywalker, that replace Cib's attested Maya meaning outright with an unrelated modern gloss rather than adapting or translating it.
Cib, the Day Sign Behind It
The corresponding Maya day is Kib', in Yucatec Cib, meaning wax or candle, and it is associated in the sources with the vulture and with the ancestors; the Aztec equivalent day is Cozcacuauhtli, king vulture. In modern highland practice the corresponding day is connected with debt, with forgiveness and with the offering of candles, which remains a central act of Maya ritual, and with the ancestors to whom the debt is owed. The Dreamspell reading of the questioning warrior has no relation to any of this. The candle and the vulture are both well attested and both absent from the Dreamspell version.
Cib is the sixteenth of the twenty authentic Tzolk'in day signs, its imagery the owl and the ancestors; the living K'iche' daykeeping tradition knows the corresponding day as Ajmaq, connected to sin, transgression and forgiveness before the ancestors. In the directional scheme, Cib belongs to the south and the colour yellow, closing the Tzolk'in's fourth four-sign directional set. Arguelles's Solar Seal 16, Yellow Warrior, departs sharply from Cib's own imagery: "Warrior" has no direct connection to the owl, the ancestors or Ajmaq's sense of transgression and reconciliation.

Derived From
Why this is disputed. Jose Arguelles presented Yellow Warrior (Solar Seal 16) of his 1980s Dreamspell system as a rediscovery of the Maya day sign Cib. Maya daykeepers who have kept the traditional 260 day count continuously reject that equivalence, since the Dreamspell count runs on a fixed Gregorian cycle out of step with the living, unbroken count, and Arguelles's own name, image and meaning for Yellow Warrior are his invention layered onto Cib rather than a transmission of its traditional meaning.
