Nous, Greek for Mind, also called Monogenes, the Only-Begotten, is the first Aeon proper to emanate from the primal pair Bythos and Ennoia in the Valentinian system Irenaeus of Lyons describes. Alone among the Aeons of the Pleroma, Nous is said to comprehend the greatness of the Father, a distinction none of the Aeons emanated after him share. Paired with Aletheia, Truth, he heads the primal Tetrad, the four Aeons Bythos, Ennoia, Nous and Aletheia that Valentinian teachers held to be the root and substance of everything that follows. Some Valentinian teachers, per Irenaeus, identified Nous or Monogenes with the heavenly Christ in his pre-incarnate aspect, distinct from the Aeon Christ later systems place near Sophia; others kept the two figures separate. From Nous and Aletheia together proceed Logos and Zoe, continuing the descent of the Pleroma.
