The Estado da India was the Portuguese colonial administration governing Goa and other Indian Ocean holdings from the early sixteenth century, operating under the Padroado real, the royal patronage arrangement giving the Portuguese crown authority over Catholic missionary activity across its Asian empire. Its religious dimension included the Goa Inquisition, established in 1560 to police conversion and orthodoxy among converted and reverted populations, alongside sustained missionary work, most notably by Francis Xavier, whose remains still rest in Goa as a major pilgrimage site.
