The Jewel Ornament of Liberation is a twelfth century lamrim treatise composed by Gampopa (1079 to 1153), the physician-monk who united the philosophical Kadam tradition he received from his teachers with the Mahamudra meditation instructions he received from Milarepa, founding the institutional basis of what became the Kagyu schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The text lays out the entire Buddhist path from Buddha-nature and impermanence through the stages of the bodhisattva to full awakening, and remains a core doctrinal text across the Kagyu lineages.
