Chrysoberyl is a beryllium aluminium oxide, the third hardest of the common gemstones after diamond and corundum, prized for its durability and its golden-green to yellow color caused by iron. Two of its varieties are among the most remarkable of all gems: the color-changing alexandrite and the chatoyant cat's-eye. In ordinary form it is a stone of discipline, self-control, and mental clarity, believed to sharpen the intellect and guard the wearer. It is used to strengthen concentration, foster self-discipline, and bring a clear, focused steadiness to thought and conduct. Long regarded as a protective talisman, chrysoberyl is worn to keep the mind alert and the will disciplined, and to shield against the drain of scattered or negative influences.

Wouter J. Hanegraaff's New Age Religion and Western Culture: Esotericism in the Mirror of Secular Thought (Brill, 1996) traces the specific modern crystal-healing framework, cleansing and charging stones, programming them with intention, correspondence to the chakras, crystal grids, and the accompanying Atlantean and Lemurian origin story, through its twentieth-century New Age sources, and shows the vocabulary and practices appearing and developing within that documented literature rather than being continuous with antiquity. Hanegraaff does not dispute that stones were worn, carved and credited with virtues in ancient societies, a separate and much older practice attested archaeologically, but the specific modern framework's own textual history is what this property records as recent. That the ancient-provenance claim is false is a historical finding about when the current framework appeared, not a judgement on the practice's legitimacy.

Chrysoberyl, and the Eye That Opens

Chrysoberyl is beryllium aluminium oxide, a distinct species from beryl despite the similar name, and at hardness 8.5 it is one of the hardest gems after diamond, corundum and moissanite. It is best known through two remarkable varieties. Alexandrite contains chromium and appears green in daylight and red under incandescent light, a colour-change first noted in Russian deposits in the nineteenth century. Cat's-eye chrysoberyl shows a sharp band of light, chatoyancy, produced by parallel needle inclusions; the trade name cymophane belongs to it, and among gems the term cat's-eye without qualification means chrysoberyl specifically. In Indian astrological practice cat's-eye chrysoberyl is the stone assigned to Ketu, one of the nine navaratna gems, which is a documented tradition; the general metaphysical attributions attached to plain chrysoberyl in modern sources are recent.

George Frederick Kunz, the American gemologist whose The Curious Lore of Precious Stones (1913) remains the standard survey of stone-lore, records that in Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka), the historic source of the finest cat's-eye chrysoberyl, the stone was carried as a defence against the evil eye and against sudden ill fortune, and was especially prized by gamblers hoping to hold their luck. Kunz also notes the old naming confusion that dogs the species: nineteenth-century mineralogists and jewellers sometimes called chrysoberyl chrysolite, a name properly belonging to peridot, so older references to a chrysolite gem cannot be read with confidence as either stone without other evidence.

Alexandrite, the Stone That Changes Colour

Chrysoberyl produces the most celebrated colour-change gem there is, and the mechanism is worth setting out because colour change is frequently claimed and rarely genuine.

Alexandrite is chrysoberyl containing a small amount of chromium. The chromium produces an absorption band in the yellow part of the spectrum, so the stone transmits both the green and the red regions and absorbs between them. Which of the two dominates depends on what the light source supplies. Daylight and fluorescent light are rich in the shorter wavelengths and the stone reads green; candlelight and incandescent light are rich in the longer ones and it reads red. The stone is not changing. The light is, and the stone is unusually sensitive to the difference.

It was found in the Urals in the 1830s, in emerald workings, and named for the tsarevich who became Alexander II. The coincidence that green and red were the colours of imperial Russian military dress did the stone's reputation no harm at all. The Ural deposit was worked out, and later material has come mainly from Brazil, Sri Lanka and East Africa, generally with a weaker change.

The trade phrase, emerald by day and ruby by night, overstates it. A fine alexandrite shifts between a bluish green and a purplish red, and stones with a complete and strong change are among the most expensive gems by weight in existence. Most material sold as alexandrite is either synthetic or is colour-change sapphire or spinel, and the distinction requires testing.
