Kyanite is a blue aluminium silicate that grows in long, bladelike crystals, famous for its anisotropic hardness, which differs sharply along and across the blade. It has the unusual reputation among crystals of never holding or accumulating negative energy, so that it is said to need no cleansing and even to clear other stones. A stone of alignment and clear communication, it is used to bring the subtle bodies into balance, to open and steady the throat center, and to encourage honest, articulate speech. Kyanite is valued in meditation for its calming, focusing effect and its ability to align the chakras quickly. It is worn to speak one's truth clearly, to smooth communication, and to maintain a steady, uncluttered flow of energy.

Wouter J. Hanegraaff's New Age Religion and Western Culture: Esotericism in the Mirror of Secular Thought (Brill, 1996) traces the specific modern crystal-healing framework, cleansing and charging stones, programming them with intention, correspondence to the chakras, crystal grids, and the accompanying Atlantean and Lemurian origin story, through its twentieth-century New Age sources, and shows the vocabulary and practices appearing and developing within that documented literature rather than being continuous with antiquity. Hanegraaff does not dispute that stones were worn, carved and credited with virtues in ancient societies, a separate and much older practice attested archaeologically, but the specific modern framework's own textual history is what this property records as recent. That the ancient-provenance claim is false is a historical finding about when the current framework appeared, not a judgement on the practice's legitimacy.

Kyanite, Hard One Way and Soft the Other

Kyanite is an aluminium silicate, Al2SiO5, and its most distinctive property is that its hardness depends on direction: a crystal is about 4.5 along its length and 6.5 to 7 across it, so it can be scratched by a knife in one orientation and not in the perpendicular one. This unusual anisotropy is why the mineral was once called disthene, two strengths. It forms as bladed, often sky-blue crystals, the colour giving the name from Greek kyanos, dark blue, though it also occurs green, black and white.

Kyanite is important to geologists as an index mineral: it, andalusite and sillimanite share the same chemical formula but form under different pressures and temperatures, so which one is present records the conditions a rock experienced. It carries no historical gem tradition; its appearance in modern crystal practice, often framed around alignment and communication, is recent and colour-led.

Kyanite in the Rock Record

Kyanite is a gem only incidentally. Its real importance is as one of three minerals that tell a geologist what a rock has been through.

Kyanite, andalusite and sillimanite all have the composition Al2SiO5. They are polymorphs: identical chemistry, three different crystal structures, and each is stable over a different range of pressure and temperature. Finding one of them in a metamorphosed aluminous rock therefore constrains the conditions under which that rock recrystallised, and finding the boundary between two of them in the field maps a line of equal pressure and temperature across a mountain belt. Kyanite is the high-pressure member of the three, so kyanite-bearing schists indicate burial to considerable depth.

The three meet at a single point on a pressure and temperature diagram, and the position of that triple point was argued over for decades because so much depended on it. It is one of the most experimentally studied equilibria in metamorphic petrology.

Kyanite is also a substantial industrial mineral. Heated, it converts irreversibly to mullite and expands, which makes it valuable in refractory bricks and in the ceramics that line furnaces, and most kyanite mined is used this way rather than cut.

The property that gemmologists know it for, hardness of roughly four to five along the length of the blade and six to seven across it, follows from the same anisotropic structure that gives it the platy habit, and it makes the stone genuinely awkward both to cut and to wear.
