Enthusiasm, Line 1

Enthusiasm begins badly, and the text says so without qualification. Legge's translation of the first line shows its subject proclaiming his pleasure and satisfaction, and pronounces evil. No condition is attached and no remedy is offered, which is unusual in a hexagram whose other lines mostly leave a way out. The fault is not the pleasure. It is the proclaiming, and specifically the fact that the proclaiming happens at the very bottom, before anything has been accomplished that would justify it.

The position explains the severity. A yielding stroke stands in an odd place at the foot of the lower trigram Kun, incorrectly placed by the positional rule and as far as it is possible to be from the single strong line at the fourth position that supplies all the energy in the figure. Classical commentary reads the first line as connected to that strong line, and treats the boast as a person trading on an association with someone powerful rather than on anything of their own.

Read against the hexagram as a whole, this line supplies the pattern Enthusiasm keeps testing: energy is real, and it belongs to whoever generates it rather than to whoever is nearest it. Thunder rising out of the earth is the figure the hexagram uses, and thunder announced in advance is only noise. Everything the remaining five lines describe, steadiness, delay, suspicion and late correction, is a variation on the error committed here first.

This is one of the bluntest cautionary lines a querent can draw, and its subject is almost always a specific piece of speech. Something favourable is anticipated, an association with an influential person, an opportunity that looks settled, a result that seems certain, and the querent has been talking about it. The reading says that the talking is the problem and that misfortune follows from it directly, not from the underlying situation, which may well be sound.

The line's distance from the hexagram's single source of energy is what a reading should attend to. Whatever the querent is excited about originates with someone else, and the excitement has been borrowed rather than produced. Announcing it converts a real connection into a claim, and a claim of this kind is easy to test and difficult to survive. Practically the advice is silence until the thing exists: no forwarding of the news, no early credit taken, nothing said that would have to be walked back.

Unlike most lines in this hexagram, no correction is offered here, and that omission is worth reading honestly rather than softening. The text is describing a fault that is complete once committed, because words already spoken cannot be recalled. A querent who has not yet spoken is being given the one useful instruction available. A querent who has already spoken is being told to expect the consequence and to make no further claims on top of it.
