A feudal lord offers what he holds in tribute to the emperor, showing the generosity of one who uses abundance to serve rather than to hoard, which small selfish men are not capable of. Positioned at the top of the lower trigram Qian, this line meets the hexagram's demand that great possession be turned toward service rather than kept for oneself.

The Feudal Lord's Tribute and Generosity Without Hoarding

The third line turns the wagon's load toward a purpose beyond itself. Legge's translation describes a feudal lord offering what he holds in tribute to the emperor, an image of abundance actively directed upward and outward rather than kept for private use, and the text notes plainly that small, selfish men are not capable of such generosity. Where the second line proved capacity, the third line proves character: strength and possession are only as good as the use they are put to, and here that use is service rather than accumulation.

This is the topmost line of the lower trigram Qian, the last position before the hexagram crosses into the upper trigram Li, and Chinese commentary reads such threshold lines as moments where a hexagram's deeper virtue is tested most directly. Great Possession could easily become a hexagram about hoarding; this line insists otherwise, making the transition into the upper trigram contingent on abundance already proving itself generous rather than merely large.

Read against the hexagram's full sequence, the third line answers a question the first two lines leave open: what is great possession actually for. The feudal lord's tribute supplies the answer before the hexagram moves any further, and the explicit exclusion of small, selfish men marks generosity, not mere holding, as the quality Great Possession asks its abundance to serve.

Reading Nine in the Third Place and Abundance Turned Toward Service

Nine in the third place is read divinatorially as counsel to direct resources, influence, or ability outward in service rather than to hold them purely for private benefit. The image of a feudal lord offering tribute to the emperor tells a querent that whatever they currently possess in abundance is best used to support something larger than themselves, a shared cause, an institution, a relationship of genuine obligation, and that this generosity is explicitly marked as beyond what a small or selfish disposition could manage.

Correctly placed at an odd position, this line sits at the top of the lower trigram Qian, the last station before the hexagram's movement rises into the upper trigram Li, fire's clarity. A reading landing here often signals a turning point where continued accumulation would be the lesser choice and active, visible generosity the greater one, since the line's entire weight falls on what abundance is offered toward rather than how much of it there is.

Set beside the second line's proven capacity and the fourth line's coming discretion, the third line supplies the hexagram's moral center: strength that serves rather than hoards. The querent is told, in effect, that the true measure of great possession is not its size but its direction, and that offering freely upward is what separates this line's generosity from ordinary self-interest.
