Holding Together, Line 3

The third line is the one place in Holding Together where the hexagram's central good, union itself, produces harm. Legge's translation shows the subject seeking union with those who ought not to be associated with, and the small commentary appended to it asks, plainly, whether such a person will not suffer injury. The line offers no counsel and names no remedy. It reports a bond formed without discernment and leaves the consequence as a question that answers itself.

Yielding in an odd position at the top of the lower trigram Kun, this line is incorrectly placed and has no correct partner above it. The sixth line, which would ordinarily be its correspondent, is also yielding, so the reach upward finds nothing firm to hold. What remains within range are the soft lines immediately beside it, and it is that proximity, rather than any suitability, that settles the company it keeps.

The placement makes the failure structural before it is ever moral. Holding Together does not ask whether a person wants to belong; it assumes they do. What the third line adds is that wanting to belong, unaccompanied by judgment about whom one belongs to, turns the hexagram's virtue into its own defect. Union with the wrong people is not a lesser version of union. In this figure it is worse than standing apart, because it commits the whole weight of attachment to something that cannot bear it.

Six in the third place is one of the plainer cautions in the sixty-four figures. As a changing line it tells a querent that an association now forming, or already formed, is with the wrong people, and that the harm expected from it follows from the association itself rather than from any further mistake. The line names no way to make the bond work. Its only implicit counsel is to recognize what is being joined before the joining is complete.

Flipping this yielding line to firm turns the lower trigram Kun into Gen, mountain, and water over mountain gives Obstruction, King Wen 39. The transformation reads with unusual directness. Hardening the position, asserting oneself inside the wrong company rather than withdrawing from it, does not repair the situation; it produces a mountain in the path with water beyond it, a figure whose whole counsel is that forward movement is blocked and that turning back and seeking help is the wise course.

A reading landing here is therefore not fatalistic but corrective. The querent is being told that the difficulty lies in whom they have chosen, not in how hard they are trying, and that force applied to a badly chosen alliance produces obstruction rather than progress. What Obstruction itself recommends, turning inward and reconsidering the route, is the counsel the third line withholds and its transformation supplies.
