Work and its rewards enter the hexagram at the second position. Legge's translation shows a subject who reaps without having ploughed for the sake of reaping, and who gathers from a third year field never cultivated in the first year with that end in view, and it finds advantage for such a person in any direction they move. The imagery is agricultural and the point is about intention: the harvest arrives, and it was never the reason the work was done.

This is a yielding line correctly placed in an even position and central to the lower trigram Zhen, which the tradition treats as the reason the promise is so broad. Centrality and correctness together describe conduct needing no adjustment, and the text rewards that by leaving the direction of advantage entirely open rather than specifying where any gain will come from.

What the line refuses is the calculating frame. It does not say that work goes unrewarded, nor that reward should be despised. It says the reward was not the motive, and that this ordering is what makes the outcome favourable. Set beside the third position's undeserved loss, the second shows the same detachment from calculation working the other way: gain that was not chased arrives as readily as loss that was not earned.

Do the work and stop pricing it. Someone drawing this changing line is being told that the effort in front of them is worth making on its own terms, and that the habit of totting up the likely return is the one thing that would spoil it. The text promises advantage in whatever direction such a person moves, which is about as unrestricted as this book's promises get, and the openness of that phrasing is itself instructive: no particular payoff is named because none is being aimed at.

In practice the position often appears around unglamorous or unrecognised effort, work done for a family, a craft, an institution, or a person, where the question of what one is getting out of it has begun to intrude. The reading does not scold the question. It reorders it, placing the doing first and letting whatever comes of it come afterwards.

Central and correctly placed in the lower trigram Zhen, this station carries none of the exposure the upper lines will meet. A reading here is generally a settled one, and the advantage promised is best understood as breadth rather than size: the querent is not told they will gain a great deal, but that no direction they move in from this footing is closed to them.
