The bed is stripped up to the skin itself, and this brings misfortune, since decay has now reached disastrously close to what it was meant to support. Yielding and correctly placed at the base of the upper trigram Gen, the line carries the decline across into the upper half of the hexagram, where what is being damaged is no longer furniture but a person.

The Stripping Reaches the Skin of the One Lying Down

The fourth line takes the damage off the furniture and puts it onto a body. Legge's translation shows the couch already overthrown and the injury going on to the skin of the one who lies on it, with the verdict of evil. Through the first two lines the loss was measured in legs and frame, things that can be replaced. Here the hexagram crosses a boundary it does not cross back over, and what is being stripped can no longer be repaired by carpentry.

The imagery has been careful to earn this. A couch is where a person is at their least defended, and the hexagram has spent three lines removing everything between that person and the erosion beneath them. The verdict needs no qualification at this point, and the text supplies none, because the situation has passed out of the range where advice about conduct or timing would make any difference.

A yielding stroke correctly occupies this even position at the base of the upper trigram Gen, and the correctness is worth naming precisely because it changes nothing. As at the second line, propriety in placement does not slow a decline that has nothing firm standing against it, and this stroke merely carries the process across into the upper half of the hexagram. What follows is the recovery worked by the fifth and sixth lines, but the fourth is where Splitting Apart admits how much has already been lost.

When Damage Stops Being Structural and Becomes Personal

This changing line marks the point at which a querent stops being able to treat a decline as an external problem. Whatever has been eroding has now reached them directly: health, reputation, savings, a marriage, the capacity to keep going. The line offers no counsel and no condition, only the verdict, and its usefulness lies in refusing to soften that. Readings that land here have usually been preceded by a period in which the querent told themselves the damage was still confined to circumstances.

Because the text withholds advice, the practical reading has to come from the hexagram around it. Movement in any direction is counselled against, so this is not the moment for a dramatic remedy, a large decision or a fresh commitment. What the following lines describe is order restored among what remains, and a single thing surviving intact, which suggests that the work available now is protective and small rather than corrective and large.

Yielding and correctly placed at the base of the upper trigram Gen, the stroke shows someone conducting themselves properly while being reached by something they did not cause and cannot argue with. A querent should take the honesty of the line as the gift in it. Naming plainly that the harm is now personal is what allows the fifth line's ordering work to begin, and it is a great deal better than continuing to defend a couch that has already been overturned.
