Banda Singh Bahadur, born Lachman Dev, was a Sikh military commander of the Khalsa Army. After years as an ascetic known as Madho Das Bairagi, he became a disciple of Guru Gobind Singh in 1708, was baptized into the Khalsa and given a new name, and was sent by the Guru to lead the Sikh struggle against the Mughal Empire, establishing a short-lived Sikh state in Punjab before his capture and execution by the Mughals in 1715 to 1716.
