Mulla Husayn Bushrui was a young Shaykhi cleric who became the first person to recognize Siyyid Ali Muhammad as the Bab, the Gate, on the evening of 22 to 23 May 1844 in Shiraz. Baha'is and Babis count him as the first of the Letters of the Living, the eighteen initial disciples who carried the new movement's message across Iran. Over the following years he traveled and taught extensively, and in 1848 he led several hundred Babis to the Shaykh Tabarsi shrine in the forested Mazandaran province of northern Iran, where the group fortified the site against besieging government and clerical forces. He was killed in battle there in February 1849, and the fort fell to the besiegers not long afterward. His recognition of the Bab is treated in Babi and Baha'i sources as the founding moment of the new religion, the night from which both movements date their beginning.

A Young Cleric's Recognition of the Bab Becomes the Night Two Religions Date Their Founding From

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Mulla Husayn Bushrui was a young Shaykhi cleric who became the first person to recognize Siyyid Ali Muhammad as the Bab, the Gate, a documented specific recognition distinct from a general expectation shared broadly among Shaykhi clergy at the time. That recognition took place on the evening of 22 to 23 May 1844 in Shiraz, a documented dated encounter distinct from a gradual conviction that formed without any single identifiable moment.

Baha'is and Babis count him as the first of the Letters of the Living, the eighteen initial disciples who carried the new movement's message across Iran, a documented founding role distinct from one convert among many with no particular priority among them. His own recognition of the Bab is treated in Babi and Baha'i sources as the founding moment of the new religion, a documented reckoning distinct from a movement whose beginning is dated instead to a later public announcement or event.

That both the Babi and Baha'i traditions date their own beginning to the specific night Mulla Husayn recognized the Bab in Shiraz, rather than to any later, more public event, marks his own act of recognition as a documented case where one young cleric's private conviction became, in his own tradition's later reckoning, the moment an entire religious movement began.

The First Letter of the Living Dies Defending a Fortified Shrine

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Over the years following his recognition of the Bab, Mulla Husayn traveled and taught extensively, a documented sustained missionary career distinct from a single dramatic act followed by withdrawal from further activity. In 1848 he led several hundred Babis to the Shaykh Tabarsi shrine in the forested Mazandaran province of northern Iran, a documented mass relocation distinct from a small band of close followers acting alone.

At the shrine the group fortified the site against besieging government and clerical forces, a documented military defense distinct from a purely religious retreat undertaken without expectation of armed conflict. Mulla Husayn was killed in battle there in February 1849, a documented death in combat distinct from a death by execution or by natural causes removed from the siege itself, and the fort fell to the besiegers not long afterward.

That the same man whose recognition of the Bab in Shiraz is treated as the founding moment of a new religion later led hundreds of its early followers into a fortified defense where he himself died in battle, marks Mulla Husayn's own path from Shiraz to Shaykh Tabarsi as a documented case where the movement's first convert also became one of its earliest fatalities in its defense.
