Priest and Scholar Together

Wande Abimbola was born in 1932 in Oyo State, Nigeria, into a family with Ifa priesthood in its lineage, and trained as a babalawo, an Ifa priest, from childhood alongside his later academic education. That dual formation, insider ritual training combined with a Western academic career, first at the University of Ife, later Obafemi Awolowo University, where he became a professor and vice chancellor, and afterward at Boston University in the United States, gives his scholarship a standing distinct from earlier ethnographic accounts of Ifa written by outside observers such as William Bascom.

His 1975 Sixteen Great Poems of Ifa and 1976 Ifa: An Exposition of Ifa Literary Corpus present translated and analyzed portions of the Ifa oral corpus for an academic readership, work regularly cited as foundational in later scholarship on Yoruba religion because it combines a trained priest's understanding of the material's internal logic with the documentary discipline of academic publication.

His academic writing draws directly on his own ritual competence as a babalawo, allowing him to explain the internal logic of divination procedures and verse interpretation in ways an outside observer without that training could not readily reconstruct, a distinction scholars of Yoruba religion have noted repeatedly when comparing his work to earlier accounts.

Awise Agbaye

Yoruba traditional authorities, including the Ooni of Ife, conferred on Abimbola the title Awise Agbaye, spokesperson for Ifa to the whole world, recognizing a public representative role for Ifa beyond any single community. He was an active advocate for Ifa's 2005 recognition by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, part of a wider effort to secure international standing and protection for the tradition.

His public role has also bridged Ifa's practice in Nigeria with related orisha traditions carried into the Americas through the Atlantic slave trade and still practiced today in Cuba, Brazil and the United States among other places, where Abimbola has been a recognized figure connecting diaspora practitioners to Yoruba sources. This entry describes his published scholarship and public religious and academic role; it does not reproduce or describe the content of Ifa initiation or of specific odu verses, which remain proper to trained practitioners and are recorded elsewhere in this atlas only as gated, unquoted material.

The title's creation reflects a broader effort within twentieth and twenty first century Yoruba religious leadership to establish institutional structures capable of representing Ifa internationally, comparable in function, though not in form, to the way other global religious traditions maintain recognized spokespeople for interfaith and public engagement.
