In his 1795 paper On the Nature and Construction of the Sun and Fixed Stars (Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society), William Herschel reasoned by analogy from sunspots, which he read as openings in the Sun's luminous outer layer, to argue the Sun has a cool, solid interior that could itself be habitable, and extended the same argument to the fixed stars generally. From Musician to Astronomer

Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel was born on 15 November 1738 in Hanover, then a separate German state that shared its ruler with Great Britain, and trained first as a professional musician, moving to England as a young man and building a career as an organist and composer before astronomy, pursued initially as an amateur sideline, came to dominate his life entirely. He built his own telescopes, achieving a standard of optical quality that let him make observations well beyond the reach of most contemporary instruments, and in 1781 discovered the planet Uranus, the first planet identified since antiquity, an achievement that won him royal patronage and a full time astronomical career.

Herschel went on to catalog thousands of nebulae and double stars, working closely with his sister Caroline Herschel, herself a distinguished astronomer, and developed influential theories about the structure of the Milky Way and the nature of stars. He died on 25 August 1822, having spent more than four decades as Britain's most prominent observational astronomer.

His discovery of Uranus, initially reported as a comet before its planetary nature was confirmed, won Herschel the patronage of King George III, who appointed him King's Astronomer and granted him a royal pension that let him abandon his musical career entirely and devote himself full time to observational astronomy for the rest of his life, an unusually direct instance of royal patronage transforming an amateur into one of the era's most productive professional scientists.

A Habitable Sun

In his 1795 paper On the Nature and Construction of the Sun and Fixed Stars, Herschel proposed that the Sun consisted of a bright, hot luminous outer atmosphere surrounding a cooler, solid, and by his argument potentially habitable interior surface, reasoning by analogy from sunspots, which he interpreted as openings in the luminous layer revealing the darker body beneath. He extended the same reasoning to the fixed stars generally, arguing they were likely constructed the same way and that each might harbor its own inhabited interior world shielded from its own fierce exterior.

Herschel framed this argument explicitly within the tradition of cosmic pluralism, the natural theology position, already well established among his contemporaries, that a God of infinite power and goodness would fill the greatest possible number of worlds with life rather than concentrate creation narrowly on Earth, and that discovering more inhabited worlds honored rather than diminished divine glory. The proposal drew informed skepticism even in Herschel's own time and has no standing in modern astrophysics, which understands the Sun as a wholly gaseous body with no solid habitable interior; the atlas records it honestly as a documented historical argument from a serious scientist working explicitly within natural theology's framework, not as a claim with any modern scientific standing.
