Two Realms Owe Their Modern Shape to the Same Society
The Astral Plane and Shambhala are two of only three links site-wide connecting Cosmology and Realms to Orders, Societies and Movements, and both of the two point at the same organization: the Theosophical Society. The third of the three, the Akashic Records' own link to the Theosophical Society, is told elsewhere in this atlas already and is not repeated here. What The Astral Plane and Shambhala share is not an origin. It is a single organization that took two realms from two different traditions and gave each one its modern, specific shape.
An Old Word Given a New Structure
The astral plane as a mapped level with its own inhabitants is a Theosophical formulation, set out by Charles Webster Leadbeater and then taken up by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and everything downstream of it. The word astral itself is far older, running back through Paracelsus to Neoplatonic writing on the soul's own vehicle. What Theosophy supplied was not the adjective, which already existed, but the plane, a structured layer with a population and a place in a wider cosmological map.
A Hidden Kingdom Given a Western Career
Shambhala is a hidden kingdom described in Tibetan Buddhist Kalachakra tradition, portrayed as a paradise of enlightened beings concealed in the mountains of Central Asia or, in some accounts, as a purely spiritual realm rather than a geographic one. Its career in the Western esoteric imagination, a secret center guiding humanity, comes through Theosophy first and then through Nicholas Roerich afterward. The Astral Plane and Shambhala begin in entirely different traditions, Neoplatonic and Paracelsian for one, Tibetan Buddhist for the other, and the one thing that moved each of them into the shape modern readers now know is the same nineteenth century society, working on two unrelated inheritances the same way twice.
