The Hifumi Norito is a Shinto purification chant built from a fixed sequence of syllables, beginning hi fu mi yo i mu na ya ko, understood in kotodama belief as capable of transforming misfortune into good fortune through the inherent spiritual power of the sounds themselves rather than through any propositional meaning the syllables carry, distinguishing it in form and mechanism from the plainly semantic Harae Tamae Kiyome Tamae, which this atlas also covers.
