Origin 1908 to 1965

Ninety-eight is 2 x 49, twice a square. It has no traditional symbolic use. Its arithmetic curiosity is that its reciprocal generates the powers of two: one divided by 98 begins 0.0102040816, doubling each pair of digits until the carries interfere. That is a property of base ten, not of the number, and it is the kind of pattern that modern numerology habitually mistakes for meaning. In digit-reduction numerology its digits sum to 17 and reduce to 8.

Pythagorean numerology is a twentieth-century label. The system it names has no demonstrable descent from Pythagoras, from the Pythagorean societies, or from the ancient arithmological literature; the letter-value chart it rests on was drawn up in the United States after 1900. Numerology has been sold since Balliett as a basis for decisions: which name to take, which date to marry on, which house number to buy. Dudley's survey of what numerologists sell is the standard critical account and its finding is blunt, numbers have power over minds, not over events. The modern system reduces every number above nine by adding its digits: 9 + 8 = 17, then 1 + 7 = 8. Whatever the system says of 98 it therefore says of 8, because it holds no separate doctrine for the higher numbers. A Composite Without Lore

Ninety-eight is twice forty-nine and reduces to seventeen and then eight. It is one of the integers just below a hundred without traditional religious symbolism; the older systems passed it over. Its structure as twice a square of seven, two times seven times seven, is the most that can honestly be said, and that is arithmetic rather than lore.

Ninety-eight factors as 2 x 7^2 and carries 6 divisors in all. Summing its proper divisors gives only 73, short of the number itself, which places it among the deficient numbers in the same classical scheme.

None of this genealogy is hidden by the numerologists themselves: Balliett, Campbell and Jordan each wrote openly as originators and systematisers rather than as transmitters of a secret ancient science, and the chain from Balliett's 1908 book through Campbell's 1931 manual to Jordan's 1965 standardisation is well documented in the numerology literature's own bibliographies.

Where the Chaldean chart and the Balliett-descended chart assign different values to the same letters, a name totalling one figure in one system need not total the same figure in the other, since the two rest on unrelated letter-value tables rather than on a shared inheritance from any single ancient source.

What the Systems Assign

Modern numerology reduces ninety-eight to eight and reads it as a number of material power and completion, the eight approached through a nine of fulfilment and an eight of authority. This reductive reading is the whole of its symbolic account. Ninety-eight is best described plainly as an integer without tradition, sourceable only through the standard machinery of numerological reduction.

A separate and older-claimed system, generally called Chaldean numerology, assigns letters to digits irregularly rather than in Balliett's repeating one-to-nine sequence, and deliberately omits nine from the chart as too sacred to attach to an ordinary letter; its popular billing as a genuinely ancient Babylonian system rests on assertion rather than on any textual evidence that has been traced back that far.

Florence Campbell, a student of Balliett's, restated and extended the chart in Your Days Are Numbered in 1931, and Juno Jordan, founder of the California Institute of Numerical Research, standardised the modern four-part chart of life path, expression, soul urge and personality numbers in 1965; both writers worked from name and birth date rather than from any older number philosophy.

The genuine Pythagorean number philosophy that this modern chart borrows its name from left no writings of its own: Pythagoras and his early followers taught only by mouth, and what survives of their number theory comes instead through Nicomachus of Gerasa, whose Introduction to Arithmetic of the first century CE became the standard authority for a thousand years, and through Iamblichus, who drew on Nicomachus two centuries later; neither wrote anything resembling a name-and-birthdate numerology.
