This atlas deliberately excluded Gnostic Aeons when filling in the Age category: an Aeon in systems such as Valentinian Gnosticism is an emanation from the divine Pleroma, a being or hypostasis with its own name and place in a genealogical procession, not a span of cosmic or mythic time the way every entry recorded here so far is. Filing Aeons under Age on the strength of the shared English word would misrepresent them.
What would resolve this A review of the Aeon material already in or proposed for the atlas against how well the existing Deity and Mythical Creature categories fit an emanated divine hypostasis, to decide whether Age, an existing category, or a new category for emanations is the right home, before any Aeon entries are added.
Resolution Resolved: Gnostic Aeons and comparable emanated hypostases need a type of their own, distinct from Age. A new Emanation type was minted, defined as a divine hypostasis or intermediary proceeding from a higher principle, and placed in the Beings & Creatures section alongside Mythical Creatures, since an Aeon is a named individual agent with its own genealogical position, not a place, a narrative or a span of time. The type note on the category entity names the three-way distinction from Deity, Being or Creature, and Age explicitly. Five figures were seeded to prove the type against real scholarship rather than left empty: the Valentinian root syzygy Bythos and Ennoia and the primal Tetrad's second pair Nous and Aletheia, cited to Irenaeus, Against Heresies 1.1.1, with their syzygy and parent-child edges recorded; and Barbelo, the first emanation of the Sethian Invisible Spirit, cited to the Apocryphon of John and to Turner's Sethian Gnosticism and the Platonic Tradition, linked to Sethianism rather than to the broader Gnosticism entity. Sophia was deliberately NOT re-minted under the new type: she already exists as a live Deity entity with substantial existing content covering her Gnostic myth, and the near-namesake guard correctly refused a duplicate. Whether she should also carry a second, Emanation-typed row for her specific rank in the Valentinian genealogy, alongside her existing Deity row, the way a cult figure can carry both a Character and a Deity row, is left as a named follow-up rather than decided unilaterally here. · August 20, 2026
