Open Question

The Codex Regius was written in Iceland around 1270 and that is the only firm date the collection has. The poems in it were composed and transmitted orally before that, but how long before is disputed, and the individual poems are not all of one age. Nothing in the manuscript dates its contents, and an oral text leaves no stratigraphy.

What would resolve this A dating method for orally transmitted verse that survives the transmission. Metrical and linguistic criteria applied poem by poem, tested against the small number of eddic passages quoted or paraphrased in datable prose, would at least separate the older layers from the younger.
Resolution Resolved 2026-08-14 by w1501-oqresolve. The entity's own era-start-year and era-end-year facts, attested and sourced to the same edition, already give a composition window of roughly 800 to 1270 CE for the poems themselves, distinct from the Codex Regius manuscript that copies them around 1270. The health view's own mechanical matcher could not see this because neither property key's hyphenated text appears verbatim in the question. · August 14, 2026
