No source contemporary with Thonmi Sambhota records when he died. His entire biography comes from Tibetan histories composed from about the eleventh century onward, several centuries after the events they describe, and modern scholarship treats the man himself as an uncertain figure whose attributed grammatical treatises cannot be independently dated to the seventh century.
What would resolve this A Tibetan imperial-period inscription or document contemporary with Songtsen Gampo's reign, distinct from the eleventh-century-and-later histories that supply Thonmi Sambhota's conventional biography, naming him or fixing a year for his death.
