Open Question

The class has a fixed size and an unfixed roll. The surviving lists agree that the eight cover the elements and the abodes and differ on which names fill the slots and in what order. No version has the standing to correct the others, and the Mahabharata story fixed the membership in practice without settling the textual question.

What would resolve this A comparative collation of the lists across the Brahmana, epic and Puranic sources establishing whether one order is prior and the others derive from it, or whether the variation goes back as far as the class does.
