The Federacao Espirita Brasileira was founded in Rio de Janeiro on January 2, 1884, by Augusto Elias da Silva, becoming the oldest and most influential national organization of Kardecist Spiritism in Brazil, the country that today holds the largest Spiritist population in the world. Kardecism itself traces to the French educator Allan Kardec, whose codified system of spirit communication and reincarnation doctrine had already spread across the Atlantic to Brazil by the time da Silva organized the federation to give the movement a lasting national institutional home.

The federation's founding gave Brazilian Spiritism a coordinating national body distinct from the many independent local Spiritist centers already meeting across the country, a structure that let the movement organize publishing, doctrine and charitable work at a national scale rather than leaving each local center to operate entirely on its own. That national coordinating role, rather than any single doctrinal innovation, is what has made the federation the movement's most influential Brazilian institution across the fourteen decades since its founding.

The Federacao Espirita Brasileira has run a service for assistance to the needy since 1890, six years after its own founding, work that today continues through its own Social Assistance Department across several Brazilian states. By 2006, according to a Revista Epoca report cited in the federation's own Wikipedia article, its philanthropic social assistance program was serving approximately a thousand families and running a daycare center for 800 children in Santo Antonio do Descoberto, a municipality in the state of Goias.

That combination, more than a century of continuous charitable service alongside a still active daycare and family assistance program, marks the federation's social assistance work as a genuinely long running institutional commitment rather than a modern addition to an older doctrinal organization.
