Nyai Roro Kidul, the Queen of the Southern Sea and patron of Javanese royal courts, Semar, the wise and comic clown god of the wayang shadow theatre, and the danyang, the guardian spirits attached to particular villages and places, all figures of Kejawen, the syncretic devotional layer of Javanese belief that runs alongside formal Islam. These figures appear across court ritual, shadow puppetry and village practice rather than in any single canonical text, and their worship persists as local custom even where it is not framed as a separate religion.
