Made at Darmstadt on 8 December 1994 by Sigurd Hofmann and colleagues, by firing nickel at bismuth, and named for Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, who discovered X-rays almost exactly ninety-nine years earlier. It sits below gold in the table and is expected to be chemically gold-like, but nothing has been measured; only a few dozen atoms have been made and its longest-lived isotope survives a matter of seconds. Placing it among the coinage metals is a statement about electron structure, not about anything anyone could hold or spend.

Overview
Roentgenium was first created in 1994 at the GSI laboratory in Darmstadt by a team led by Sigurd Hofmann, by fusing bismuth and nickel nuclei. It was named after Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, the German physicist who discovered X-rays. Roentgenium is an intensely radioactive synthetic metal, known only from a handful of atoms that survive for a tiny fraction of a second. It has no studied chemistry and is expected to lie beneath gold in the table; each atom is detected only through the chain of decays it produces, and making even a few has demanded months of accelerator time.
Roentgen stumbled on his discovery by accident in November 1895, noticing that a screen coated with barium platinocyanide glowed faintly across the room whenever he ran current through a nearby cathode-ray tube, even with the tube wrapped in black paper; he called the unknown radiation X-rays, X for unknown, and within weeks produced the first medical radiograph ever made, an image of his wife Anna Bertha's hand, whose bones and wedding ring she reportedly found so unsettling to see that she is said to have exclaimed she had seen her own death. The image, and the sensation it caused when published, made Roentgen instantly world-famous and helped X-ray imaging spread into hospitals within just a few years of the discovery.
Named for the Discoverer of X-Rays
Roentgenium honours Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, who in 1895 discovered the mysterious penetrating radiation he called X-rays, a finding that opened the age of modern physics, transformed medicine, and earned him the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. Announcing the element's name near the hundredth anniversary of that discovery made the tribute especially apt. Roentgen's rays had been among the first hints of the hidden structure of matter that the study of radioactivity and the atom would go on to reveal, the same line of inquiry that eventually made synthetic elements like this one possible.
Roentgenium has no ancient or esoteric tradition, being a synthetic element of the 1990s; its name links the far end of the periodic table back to one of the founding discoveries of the physics that built it. Roentgen deliberately declined to patent his discovery, insisting that a finding of such medical importance should belong to humanity rather than to any individual or company, a choice that let X-ray technology spread rapidly into hospitals worldwide within just a few years, in sharp contrast to the tightly controlled intellectual property that surrounds many scientific breakthroughs today. He donated the prize money from his 1901 Nobel Prize to his university rather than keeping it for himself, a further mark of the same principled stance.
